Buying groceries? Check out the new WREG Price Tracker
Mar 26, 2025
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- We're all feeling the pain of higher prices these days, especially at the grocery store. We also know the economy was a big issue for many voters during the last election, with the president promising to deliver lower prices. So, has that happened yet, and when will we see some re
lief?
WREG is launching a new tool to help you and your family check prices and save money. It's called the WREG Price Tracker.
NewsChannel 3 is tracking prices for more than 20 common grocery items, as well as gas across the MidSouth.
We're shopping online at three major grocery retailers (Kroger, Walmart, and Target) for things we all buy, like eggs, meat, and vegetables, as well as beverages, even beer, and pantry staples.
We started tracking prices more than a month ago. Of all the items on the WREG Price Tracker grocery list, eggs saw the biggest jump in price.
In early February, the average price for a dozen eggs across all three stores was $4.22.Last week, that same dozen cost $5.75, which means we're paying a difference of more than $1.50.
In addition to eggs, we also saw higher prices for items like milk and ground beef.
On the flip side, shoppers are also saving some money. The average price for the following items actually decreased in mid-March compared to early February:
Lettuce
Tomato
Sliced turkey
Bacon
Boneless skinless chicken breasts
Making meals for the family can add up, so we wanted to see how much breakfast costs. We calculated the total prices at all three stores for the following items:
• Milk• Eggs• Bacon• Bread• Cereal• Orange Juice• Coffee
The total was just over $36 during the week of March 17th at Walmart, which was the lowest total. The same items ran around $33 the week of February 3rd.
Our total grocery bill for the WREG Price Tracker was $110 (based on averages), which was just over $3 higher than when we first started tracking prices last month.
Our prices were gathered from all three retailers online. Prices may vary by location. Except when indicated, we priced items using store brands. Sale prices were only included if listed without an additional purchase requirement. ...read more read less
