Mar 26, 2025
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City is cementing its name as a top barbecue destination with the world's first-ever barbecue museum dedicated to the culinary craft.
On Wednesday morning, Visit KC announced that the metro will be welcoming the Museum of BBQ into the shops at Crown Center on Saturday,
April 12.
Kansas City FilmFest returns this weekend for 29th year
The new tourist destination will consist of immersive exhibits and educational opportunities about the craft, teaching visitors about the different regions in the U.S. known for barbecue.
“The Museum of BBQ is a feast for your senses,” says founder Jonathan Bender. “Get ready to immerse yourself in the smoke and sizzle of the world of barbecue.”
Guests will enter the museum through a replica Southern Pride smoker door and subsequently be met by five installations - Meat, Rub, Wood and Fire, Smoke, and Sauce. These exhibits aim to teach visitors about the technical components of the cooking style and specifically tackle how meat becomes barbecue.
Then, museum-goers will be met with five additional installations, addressing the regional and wide-spread impact of the barbecue culture, history and style. These exhibits will take guests through the Carolinas, Memphis, the Bean Pit, Texas, and, of course, Kansas City.
Additionally, like any museum, the Museum of BBQ will feature art from local and international artists, including Kansas City-based artists Sike Style, Mary Nguyen, Chandler Johnson, Charlie Duber, Katie Lee and the Carpenter Collective.
Finally, no world’s first barbecue museum would be complete without a retail store offering everything from sauces to sunglasses.

The shop will have a number of rubs, brines, snacks, spritzes, and more, so guests can conclude their trip with a full stomach, and more importantly, a piece of Kansas City culture.
According to Visit KC, "The store offers a selection of craft barbecue snacks, including hickory smoked cheese puffs, sunflower seeds, BBQ chips, and nuts. Grill masters will appreciate tools like meat claws, barbecue mops, and burger presses. Visitors can take home a little bit of the Museum of BBQ with our merch: stickers, sunglasses, hats, koozies, and t-shirts."
