INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A Bartholomew County Sheriff’s deputy says the man who rear-ended him at a Columbus intersection blamed his right foot for the accident.
Deputy J.D. Myers was sitting in his patrol vehicle at the intersection of 10th Street and Whitfield Drive on Tuesday when he was
hit from behind. The intersection is just west of U.S. 31 on the city’s southeast side.
According to the sheriff’s office, the other driver — later identified as 69-year-old David Caldwell — told Myers that his foot “slipped off the brake,” causing the collision.
“As the accident was being documented, Deputy Myers observed Caldwell throw a baggie of suspected narcotics under his vehicle. When confronted, Caldwell denied any knowledge of the baggie,” the sheriff’s office said in a release.
The contents of the baggie were tested and showed the presence of fentanyl. The sheriff’s office says Caldwell also had a drug pipe and a gun in his possession at the time of the accident.
Caldwell was taken to the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of possession of paraphernalia and possession of narcotics while in possession of a firearm.
He was being held Wednesday on a $15,000 bond.
