GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — A longtime Greensboro councilwoman has announced a new political venture.
Mayor Pro Tem Marikay Abuzuaiter announced on Wednesday that she is running for Greensboro mayor.
"Greensboro is a place of extraordinary potential. This is evident from the economic developme
nt boon we are experiencing," she said in a news release. "Most importantly, I believe that we need someone who is knowledgeable about the processes that brought these amazing companies to Greensboro over the last 15 years."

According to the announcement, Abuzuaiter "realizes the critical challenges" facing Greensboro.
"Whether it is our homelessness issue, community/public safety, infrastructure needs or providing an avenue that creates more housing, I am ready and willing to collaborate, provide and nurture innovative solutions."
Abuzuaiter served as an at-large council member for the Greensboro City Council and currently serves as mayor pro tem. She says she has been "actively engaged" in local initiatives that have helped Greensboro, including providing pay raises for Greensboro police officers.
She also says she was "instrumental" in the partnership between the City of Greensboro and Guilford County to launch the Guilford County Family Justice Center and still serves on the center's executive committee.
"Without a safe city, we cannot attract and retain businesses, nor can we attract the employees, and their families, needed to work in those businesses," she said.
According to the announcement, "Marikay aims to continue creating a bright future for our city."
Mayor Nancy Vaughan announced last May that she would not be seeking reelection after her term ran out.
Former Greensboro Mayor Robbie Perkins also announced a run for mayor.
