WASHINGTON COUNTY, Wis. (WFRV) - The Washington County Sheriff's Office released a statement regarding an allegation made that an officer stole from a gas station while on duty.

The office was alerted to the accusations on February 27, and the deputy was immediately put on administrative leave pending the results of criminal investigations and an internal inquiry.
The alleged incident reportedly involved repetitive food thefts by a deputy with about 10 years on the force while on duty at a Richfield gas station. According to the release, the criminal investigation took priority over the internal inquiry due to the depth of the situation.
The criminal investigation was forwarded to the Washington County District Attorney's Office, and a special prosecutor was appointed to review it to avoid conflicts of interest.
During the process of an internal investigation, which potentially involved administrative discipline to the Sheriff's Grievance Committee, the officer involved resigned from his post.
