BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- The accused drunken driver in the March 16 crash that killed a Bakersfield couple told police her cousin was killed by a drunken driver in 2022, and she knew it was dangerous to drink and drive, according to a newly-released court filing.
The probable cause declarati
on filed in the case against Anabell Aleyna Correa also says two others injured in the rideshare vehicle the couple were traveling in suffered injuries including a brain bleed and broken bones.
Correa, 21, is facing charges including two counts of second-degree murder. Police say she admitted to drinking and had a blood-alcohol content of 0.088% when her car ran a red light and broadsided the rideshare vehicle at the intersection of Coffee Road and Stockdale Highway.
She's being held without bail and is due back in court next week.
Killed in the crash were Max and Desiree Mooney, both 30. Max died at the scene, and Desiree was pronounced dead at Kern Medical.
The married couple went out for drinks and were returning home in the rideshare vehicle when the crash occurred at about 1:37 a.m., police said. The driver and another passenger were injured.
Police arrived to find Correa standing by her white Hyundai Azera, which had major front-end damage.
She told police, "I drank one Twisted Tea, bro," referring to an alcoholic beverage.
Later she said, "I'm never seeing my kid, huh, just because I drove and drank one, two drinks," according to police reports. She showed signs of intoxication including red and watery eyes, and smelled of alcohol, an officer wrote.
And she continued to make spontaneous statements, the officer wrote. One was something like, "When people drive drunk people always die," the officer wrote.
Correa spent several days in a hospital before she was booked into Lerdo Jail. She appeared in court Tuesday wearing a medical boot and using crutches. ...read more read less
