Cruz says Signal breach 'comparable to a butt dial'

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said that the access of a Signal group chat including top Trump administration officials discussing a U.S. attack against Houthi rebels in Yemen by an editor for The Atlantic is “comparable to a butt dial.”
“I have no — no good explanation for why Jeffrey Goldberg
was added,” Cruz said on a Wednesday episode of his “Verdict” podcast, referring to the editor in chief of The Atlantic.
“He’s the editor in chief of The Atlantic, and it was a screw-up,” the Texas Republican added. “And let’s start with that. It was clearly a screw-up; it was embarrassing. It’s sort of comparable to a butt dial.”
Goldberg’s Monday report that detailed his time in the group chat rattled Washington and resulted in heightened concerns about national security. Among the figures included in the chat were national security adviser Mike Waltz and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
“We made a mistake, we’re moving forward, and we’re going to continue to knock it out of the park for this president,” Waltz said Tuesday on Fox News about the incident.
On Wednesday, The Atlantic published the group chat messages inadvertently shared with Goldberg. The messages show specific details about the Yemen attack that were not included in Monday’s report, such as the airstrike’s specific timing and the weapons that would be used.
“At the end of the day, though, what is striking … although you’re seeing the sharks circle and trying to attack the president [and] the national security team, is the underlying substance of what’s being discussed is actually quite good,” Cruz said of the group chat. ...read more read less
