Officials warn of 'elevated fire danger' across southeastern South Carolina on Wednesday

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Forecasters warned of an elevated fire danger Wednesday due to dry conditions, low humidity, and gusty winds.
The National Weather Service in Charleston said the risk was present for southeastern South Carolina away from the immediate coast Wednesday afternoon until ab
out 8 p.m.
State forestry officials said the combination of low relative humidity, gusty winds, and dryness “is a recipe for wildfires” to easily ignite and spread rapidly. Humidity values as low as 17 to 25 percent and wind gusts as high as 15 to 20 mph are anticipated.
A statewide burning ban remains active for every South Carolina county until further notice. This ban prohibits all outdoor burning, including yard debris, prescribed burning, campfires, bonfires, and other recreational fires.
Gov. Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency Saturday amid wildfires burning in the Upstate region, including the massive wildfire at Table Rock in Pickens County.
That fire has spread to roughly 2,293 acres and prompted mandatory evacuations in Pickens and Greenville counties. Gov. McMaster’s declaration enabled resources to help firefighters battle the wildfire there.
Rain offers little help in fighting Table Rock fire
“The statewide burning ban remains in effect as wildfire risks remain high across the state. Anyone who violates this ban can and will go to jail,” said Gov. McMaster on Saturday afternoon.
Firefighters in Berkeley County responded to multiple brushfires over the weekend, one of which was an illegal burn that neared several residences in the Huger area. One person was fined by the South Carolina Forestry Commission for that incident. ...read more read less
