Court rules offroading vehicles are allowed at Oceano Dunes in San Luis Obispo

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The battle over the beach has been decided. A panel of three California Court of Appeals judges ruled off-road vehicles can be driven on the Central Coast's Oceano Dunes.
They are now saying a state agency overstepped its authority when they banned off-
roading at the beach.
Those judges say the California Coastal Commission went too far and were outside of their authority when they banned off-roading vehicles from the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area.
They say that power lies within the San Luis Obispo County government, not the state agency.
The California Coastal Commission has long said the off-roading is damaging to the coastline and in 2021 voted unanimously to ban the vehicles.

YourCentralValley.com reached out to them for comment on the ruling, but their representative said they are still reviewing it.
Meanwhile, the president of the Friends of Oceano Dunes Jim Suty said he is ecstatic.
"This ruling is fantastic because it ensures the public that the park is going to stay open," Suty said.
He says tourists coming to the coast to off-road spend millions, and without it, the local economy suffers.
He also says the land is taken care of. He says the money from the Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Reaction fees help pay for programs to protect endangered species.
"But you've got these rabid environmentalists that just won't let go. They will not be happy until everything is removed from that beach," he said.
He also said while they are happy now, the California Coastal Commission can still appeal this ruling, and they're involved in multiple other lawsuits. ...read more read less
