ALSEN, La. (Louisiana First) - Dirty air and water are a key concern for many Alsen residents.
They made that clear to Mayor Sid Edwards and Councilman Anthony Kenney. The community is the site of multiple industrial plants as well as industrial waste dumping grounds.
Residents report it's maki
ng them sick - and they want to fight for cleaner air and water.
One lifelong Alsen resident, Lorraine Thompson, said she remembers a cleaner environment before the plants were built.
“We would have meetings but they'd come out and just talk over our heads, but we knew what was going on, what we were smelling," Thompson mentioned.
Alsen resident Bettie Jefferson said, “Our ancestors didn't have all the knowledge and the technology we have now, so we had no one to fight for us."
Residents are also voicing concerns about drainage, blight and lack of youth programs.
Kenney said he'd take these concerns into account when creating a finalized master plan for his district.
