San Diego police officers shot and killed a 59-year-old man who’d reportedly brandished a gun in a residential neighborhood just north of Scripps Ranch early Tuesday afternoon.
Authorities did not identify the man but said he lived in the area. The man died at the scene. Police found he also had a
knife in his possession. No one else was reported injured during the encounter.
It remains unclear what prompted the incident.
“The investigation is still in the early stages. We’re still working diligently to gather all the surrounding facts,” said sheriff’s Lt. Patrick Fox. The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the police shooting under a countywide protocol designed to prevent agencies from investigating shootings by their own officers.
According to investigators, someone called 911 shortly after noon to report a man pointing a gun at people in the area of Angelique Street and Cypress Canyon Road, south of Scripps Poway Parkway. The area is known as Miramar Ranch North.
Fox said the man had reportedly pointed a semiautomatic handgun at construction workers and then a pest control worker.
The construction workers fled, and the pest control worker hid in his work vehicle. Fox said several officers arrived, but the man ignored their commands. The department’s SWAT team was called in, as was an emergency negotiation team.
The encounter occurred in a shallow cul-de-sac lined with upscale homes just off Angelique. Police radio traffic indicated the gunman was at one point standing at the end of a driveway, wearing a shirt and jeans but shoeless, occasionally shifting the gun from hand to hand.
According to the radio traffic, the pest control worker was able to slip into the back of his work vehicle to take cover — but the vehicle was directly in front of the armed man, just yards away.
Fox said that as officers were trying to evacuate people, the armed man approached with the gun. Two SWAT officers opened fire. Radio traffic indicated they were in sniper positions. ...read more read less
