ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The Hotel Cadillac in Rochester is set for significant revitalization. Its redevelopment project was just given $6.2 million from the state to turn the Rochester landmark into the "Fine Arts Building Lofts."
The Lofts will both be modern but will pay homage to the origin
al "Fine Arts Building," which was constructed in 1915.
The building became a hotel in 1927, and remained a hotel until it became vacant in 2018.
Erik Frisch is the deputy commissioner of neighborhood and business development for the city. He said the $21 million project is mixed-income and mixed-use.
The 42 units are affordable, with 13 for young adults at risk of homelessness, 14 will be artist-preferred, and the remaining 15 units are capped at 80% of the area median income.
For the redevelopment, Frisch says the development and construction team will have to follow historic preservation guidelines.
"It's really bringing that additional vibrancy in the area," Frisch said. "You're seeing more shops and restaurants open in the area, taking advantage of that built-in population. What we also hope for over time is that then leads to growth again in the commercial market."
Frisch says the iconic "Hotel Cadillac" sign will be preserved and kept in the future art exhibit on the first floor.
"It's the Fine Arts Building, it's meant to be integrated with and supported by the local arts community, and this will provide a new gallery space in the heart of downtown," he said.
Construction is scheduled to start later this year, with occupancy starting in 2027. ...read more read less
