San Diego Zoo wants your help naming new sloth bear cubs
Mar 25, 2025
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- What name do you like best? The San Diego Zoo is asking the public to help name its new baby sloth bears.
Nimala, Nimali, or Shehani for the female cub, and Kavi, Rishi, or Kumar, are the choices for the male cub at the San Diego Zoo.
The two bear cubs were born on D
ec. 6 to mom Shala and can be seen in their enclosure along the zoo’s Upper Center Street. You might even see the first-time mom carry the cubs on her back as sloth bears are the only bears that do so.
Sloth bear cubs stay with their mother until they are 1.5 to 2.5 years old.

Sloth bears are a vulnerable species of bear due to habitat destruction and poaching, that are not related to sloths, and are found in hot, dry grasslands and forests of South Asia and the Indian subcontinent.
Now, at just under four months old, the San Diego Zoo needs your help naming the bear cubs.
