SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Eversource is once again partnering with the Arbor Day Foundation to distribute more than 1,000 free trees to customers across its service areas.
As part of the Energy-Saving Trees program, residents in Springfield can reserve a free tree to plant on their property, he
lping to promote environmental sustainability and reduce energy costs. The initiative allows eligible customers to use an interactive online tool to determine the best location on their property for planting their trees.

The tool also calculates potential environmental benefits and estimated annual cost savings. The free trees will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis, with distribution events scheduled in both communities in early May.
“Following the success of last year’s Energy-Saving Trees program, we’re excited to expand to additional communities in Massachusetts,” said Christopher Gonzalez, Eversource’s Manager of Vegetation Management. “Properly placed trees not only help customers reduce energy use, but they also provide a range of environmental benefits, from improving air quality to reducing stormwater runoff and supporting biodiversity. We’re grateful to work with the Arbor Day Foundation on a program that aligns with our commitment to environmental stewardship while ensuring safe and reliable electricity for our customers.”
Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno emphasized the city’s dedication to tree planting and conservation, noting its nearly 40-year recognition as a "Tree City USA" community.

“I am very proud of our city’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship,” Sarno said. “Increasing our tree canopy not only enhances our neighborhoods but also plays a vital role in improving air quality and strengthening our climate resilience. We deeply appreciate this partnership between Eversource and the Arbor Day Foundation, and I want to thank our Forestry Division for their ongoing efforts in maintaining these valuable resources.”
Dan Lambe, CEO of the Arbor Day Foundation, echoed the importance of the initiative, highlighting the long-term benefits of urban tree planting.
“We are proud to continue our partnership with Eversource to expand tree planting in cities and neighborhoods across New England,” Lambe said. “Trees play a critical role in improving air quality and providing energy savings, and we are grateful to work with a company that is committed to fostering healthier and more sustainable communities.”
Eligible customers in Springfield can reserve one free tree per household through the online portal, which launched this week. The program will remain open until all trees have been claimed.
