CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A Chesterfield County man was sentenced to over 10 years in prison on Tuesday for his involvement in a string of Richmond-area armed robberies in 2023.
On Tuesday, March 25, 31-year-old Kumkio Leftha Martin was sentenced to 12 years and three months in prison for
armed robbery and brandishing a firearm during a violent crime, according to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). The incidents took place in April and May of 2023.
Per court documents, on April 22, 2023, two people were robbed at gunpoint on Dunston Avenue in the city of Richmond.
Using the victims' accounts of what happened and their description of the suspect, the Richmond Police Department was able to identify a suspect vehicle on surveillance footage -- a four-door Acura sedan with a moon roof and "distinctive stickers" on its windows. Police then identified the registered owner of the car -- Martin's girlfriend -- via its license plate.

The next day, on April 23, 2023, a convenience store in Chesterfield County was robbed at gunpoint. According to court documents, Martin pointed a gun at those inside the store and demanded staff give him money and cigarettes. He also took multiple victims' phones, as well as a bag that contained a laptop, payroll checks, credit cards, car keys and an unspecified amount of cash.
Police viewed footage of the incident captured by a nearby camera and noticed a car that looked like the Acura sedan.
A third robbery took place on May 4, 2023, at a Tobacco Hut in Richmond. According to court documents, Martin entered the store, brandished a gun and demanded a store employee give him money and vaping products. Martin's girlfriend was present for the robbery.
The Acura sedan with its distinctive stickers was then seen driving past the store two minutes after Martin left.
Per court documents, police later pulled Martin over in the Acura sedan. They then searched his girlfriend's home, where they found the gun Martin carried during the Tobacco Hut robbery.
On Nov. 12, 2024, Martin pleaded guilty to charges relating to the Tobacco Hut robbery.
According to the DOJ, part of his plea involved admitting he committed the April 23, 2023, armed robbery in Chesterfield County -- however, the DOJ does not mention the April 22, 2023, armed robbery being part of said plea.
This decision comes after a judge denied Martin's lawyers' claim that using license plate cameras to tie him to these crimes violated his 4th Amendment rights. ...read more read less
