RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Friends of James River Park will host the annual 5K memorial Wood River Run in April in honor of a young kayaker who lost his life on the James River seven years ago.
The organization announced on Tuesday, March 25 that runners and walkers, with their children in strolle
rs and on-leash dogs, are welcome to attend the Wood River Run -- a 5K run or walk -- at Pony Pasture in the James River Park System on Saturday, April 26.
Check-in begins at 8 a.m., with the timed race starting at 9 a.m., according to organizers. The race is expected to finish at 11 a.m. that day. Participants will receive a finishing medal.
In February 2018, Christian Wood, a senior at Trinity Episcopal School in Richmond, was pulled from the James River near Belle Isle. Authorities said Wood was experiencing cardiac arrest after his kayak overturned and he became caught in the hydraulics.
Proceeds from the event will go to Friends of James River Park -- the volunteer organization dedicated to the conservation of the James River Park System -- and fund scholarships to Passages Adventure Camp in Wood's memory.
