Faith Hill Farm fears future of business with construction of new development next door

EAST GREENWICH, R.I. (WLNE) — A proposed housing development in East Greenwich has already caused a nearby horse farm to lose business, according to the owner of Faith Hill Farm.
“I have been telling the town of East Greenwich, the planning board, what this is doing to my business,” Faith H
ill Farm Owner Pam Steere Maloof said.
On March 19, the East Greenwich planning board said ‘yes’ to building Ridgeline Estates and Condominiums, a new affordable housing development off of Division Road.
The new development would sit right next to Faith Hill Farm, which boards around 40 horses on its property.
“Blasting and rock drilling and there is going to be huge excavators with rock drills on the back of them,” Maloof said. “It’s maybe 100 feet over my property line.”
Maloof said seven of her clients have already pulled out of boarding their horses at her farm because they are afraid of what the loud sounds will do to the animals.
“Their flight instincts is what keep them alive. They don’t think, they just panic,” Maloof said.
Maloof said she cannot have anyone riding during construction because she will be deemed negligent if she lets anyone ride their horses in the arena because the horses may spook, which is a natural reaction for them.
A spokesperson for East Greenwich’s planning committee said in a statement,
“The planning board has approved a 43-unit development containing 11 affordable units under the comprehensive permit process in accordance with Rhode Island General Law 45-53. The application was reviewed per state and local regulations, and the decision reflects the outcome of that process.”
“I am exercising some of my options and constitutional rights and exploring those and I am talking to some other legal counsel,” Maloof said.
Doug DeSimone of Douglas Properties, the builder for the housing project, wouldn’t comment on the situation when ABC6 News reached him Tuesday.
