VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The
re comes a time when you can't help but take notice of the work one does. Sandra King of Virginia Beach will certainly draw your attention. Her selfless attitude and humble nature centers on putting others first and carrying forth a generational gift of giving.
"I would say it began as a child," King said. "My grandmother's routines. She always was in the community helping and having people over and feeding and doing all of that. So you kind of learned from that. I was there in the forefront helping her as she helped others. So as an adult, I just started doing the same thing."
And by following the family matriarch's imprint, King would go on to develop Helping Hands Resources, Inc. A five-year-old non-profit fulfilling a multitude of needs in the seven cities.
"Started with just my family, and then it kind of grew, too," says King. "We started with helping families during Christmas time, purchasing toys and different stuff like that. Then it went from feeding homeless and it just kind of trickled from there."
As King has extended resources to hundreds plagued by impoverished conditions, one conviction continued to cross her mind.
"At any point it could be me," she says. "So it was, you know, just that thought that I want to be that person that I would want someone to be for me."
And she makes it a point to show people they matter, free of discrimination, by feeding the less fortunate, saluting veterans with a southern feast, showing senior appreciation with brunch, and letting children know they're loved through toy drives.
"We service everyone," she says. "It's the joy of seeing people receiving what they need, the joy of them being excited about the little things that we take for granted, like food and like a blanket or a pair of socks, or knowing that they can get their electricity paid."
King also pays it forward by putting on festive events, health fairs, back to school giveaways, as well as offering mentorship programs and job placement initiatives. And as her peers say, the community pillar is always finding creative avenues to give back.
But her community adores her for something even more significant. For two decades, she's been a fixture in the Virginia Beach Public School System. Her career began as volunteer and now a registrar.
"So I'm the first person that the parents see and that the children see in the morning. And then usually sometimes the last person they see going out," King says. "I was the PTA president at three different schools at one time, the middle school, high school and elementary school because I had children in each one. And then it went from there to being a substitute from there to the positions that I'm in now."
Though she holds an extensive list of accomplishments, in King's eyes, there's still far more to do.
"I would like to open a facility," she said. "I would like to have a building where we don't have to well, we will still go out to the community, but we could have a space where they can come to us, they can come in, they can eat, they can shower. Speaking of homeless, that homeless community, we can have a place where we can have computers for them to write papers for our students to have tutoring sessions or our job placement clients can come do their resumes or, you know, just a home."
She attributes her capacity to help so many to the unwavering support of her family. They keep her motivated and always remind her of the remarkable woman she is.
"I have a huge family that is amazing and supportive," says King. "And I love them so much because I would not be able to do anything that I do."
