KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- On Sunday, genetic testing company 23andMe filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy.
In a letter to customers, 23andMe said in part, “Through this process, we will seek to find a partner who shares our commitment to customer data privacy and allows our mission of helping people ac
cess, understand and benefit from the human genome to live on.”

If you have a 23andMe account, cyber security expert Burton Kelso says now is the time to log in and download your data and then delete it from the company's servers.
“If you don't take those steps to remove your data, if the company were to be sold, then your data is included in that, then it has the potential of falling into the hands of cyber criminals and other parties who may sell that information to companies that don't have a robust cybersecurity system like 23andMe does,” Kelso explained.
Attorney generals in at least seven states have issued warnings to customers to consider deleting their information.

In a news release and letter to customers, 23andMe said in part.
“There are no changes to the way the Company stores, manages, or protects customer data. Any buyer will be required to comply with applicable law with respect to the treatment of customer data, and any transaction will be subject to customary regulatory approvals, including, as applicable, approvals under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act and the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States.”
“The company hasn't been sold yet, so it's never too late to get rid of your information. You want to do it now while the company is still in operation because that means their website is still running,” Kelso said.
Privacy concerns related to customers' information also emerged during a breach in 2023.
“23andMe did suffer a data breach. So if you are receiving scam phone calls or email messages, it's a possibility that your information is already on the dark web,” Kelso explained.
