INDIANAPOLIS -- An employee at a Wingstop on the west side of Indianapolis has been arrested after police said he shot and injured a delivery driver following an altercation.
According to court documents obtained by FOX59/CBS4, officers were called on Feb. 23 around 12:19 a.m. to investigate a p
ossible person shot run at an apartment complex in the area.
Court documents show that the victim told police that he had been shot at a Wingstop located at 5309 W. 10th Street. The victim went on to tell police that he was shot while he was trying to pick up an order for DoorDash.
The victim said there was confusion about the order when he arrived and was told there would be a 25-minute wait for it to be ready. He said a female employee was being "rude" to him, court documents said. When he confronted the employee about this, the driver claimed seven male employees "attacked" him while wearing their Wingstop uniforms.
The victim said he was struck in the mouth before he managed to exit the restaurant. As he was approaching his vehicle, the victim said he heard a gunshot fired in his direction. A few moments later, he noticed that he had been struck in the right side of his back, court documents said. At least one more gunshot was fired at him as he entered his vehicle and drove to his apartment, where he waited for police to arrive.
As part of their investigation, detectives canvassed the scene in the parking lot outside the Wingstop. There, police recovered a spent 9mm cartridge casing. Investigators also combed through the victim's 2011 black Chevrolet Malibu, where they determined one bullet had been fired at the rear seat of the vehicle.
Investigators reviewed employment records, time clock records and surveillance footage from the restaurant as they attempted to piece together a timeline of the incident. Detectives also sifted through video footage collected at a Big Red Liquors, which is next door to the Wingstop in the same strip mall.
Court documents show that the surveillance footage depicted a man dressed in all black running westward into the parking lot while armed with a handgun. The surveillance footage collected from inside the Wingstop appeared to show the same employee exit the restaurant through the back door, remove his uniform, allegedly fire his gun and then re-enter the restaurant.
Investigators managed to narrow down the list of possible suspects to three males they believed were working on the night of the incident. 25-year-old Ezra Watkins was one of these individuals, who police brought in for an interview on March 21.
During the interview, Watkins confirmed that he worked at the same Wingstop where the shooting had occurred. He also reportedly confirmed that he was working when the altercation with the delivery driver unfolded. He recalled hearing one or two gunshots but wouldn't identify the shooter, according to court documents.
Watkins allegedly went on to deny ever having a firearm in his possession during the incident. Watkins did, however, reportedly tell police that he owned a Taurus 9mm handgun and that it was being kept at his apartment.
Officers proceeded to conduct a search warrant at Watkins' apartment, where they allegedly found a black bag containing 9mm ammunition, a Wingstop hat and a black mask belonging to Watkins.
Watkins was placed under arrest and transported to the Marion County Jail where he was preliminarily charged with Battery by means of a Deadly Weapon, which is a Level 5 Felony.
This is the second shooting to occur at this Wingstop location. According to previous reports, a former employee fired multiple bullets at a customer following a disagreement in January of last year. The case ended with the arrest of 49-year-old Lawrence Sneed. ...read more read less
