Indiana ranks 3rd in nation for highest foreclosure filings
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indiana is among the highest in the nation for foreclosure filings over the past year, just behind Delaware and Nevada, national data shows.
The Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana (FHCCI) is sounding the a
larm, saying Marion County foreclosures rose for a third straight year. Last year, 1,630 Marion County home owners defaulted on their mortgages and lenders took possession of their properties.
“We don’t want anyone losing their homes especially right now. This ends up impacting generational wealth building and the reality is that very often homes investors, who may be wanting to purchase, flip to expensive rentals, so we want to make sure people are able to stay in their homes,” Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana Executive Director Amy Nelson said.
The neighborhoods with the highest foreclosure rates is Crown Hill followed by Near Southside and Arlington Woods. In Crown Hill, ATTOM Data shows there is one foreclosed home for every 29 houses.
Nelson said rising property taxes and home owners insurance are just some of the factors that could lead to higher costs for homeowners, but help is available.
“HUD has free housing counseling agencies. We have several in our community but they are also statewide that can provide free counseling services to individuals to potentially help them to renegotiation with their lender or understand their rights,” she said.
FHCCI also advised against “We buy homes for cash” options in order to keep homeowners in their communities.
“This is not just an Indianapolis issue, this isn’t just an urban issue, this is a statewide problem and we need to make sure our state leadership is recognizing this,” Nelson said.
