INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The USS Indiana, a Virginia-class fast-attack submarine, will return to its homeport after six months at sea.
The submarine’s deployment ends Thursday, March 27, when the return to the Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, Connecticut.
The submarine, under th
e command of Cmdr. Kyle McVay, has spent six months on deployment, executing the Chief of Naval Operations’ maritime strategy in support of national security interests and maritime security operations.
During its deployment, the Indiana played a key role in supporting the Navy’s maritime strategy, which includes core capabilities such as sea control, power projection, forward presence, maritime security, and deterrence. Fast-attack submarines like the Indiana are multi-mission platforms designed to excel in a variety of warfare areas, including anti-submarine warfare, anti-ship warfare, strike warfare, and special operations.
“Fast-attack submarines are vital to the Navy’s operational flexibility, providing critical capabilities in multiple areas of naval warfare,” McVay said. “The crew of Indiana performed admirably during this deployment, helping ensure the security of the maritime domain and supporting national defense objectives.”
Commissioned in September 2018, the Indiana is the third U.S. warship to bear the name of the state of Indiana. Measuring 377 feet in length and 34 feet in beam, the submarine carries a crew of over 134 personnel.
The return of the Indiana will be livestreamed in multiple intervals on the Naval Submarine Base New London’s official Facebook page.
