The Aurora Fire Rescue responded to the crash to monitor a Tesla that was involved, which had sustained battery damage and entered "thermal runaway," immediately catching fire.
Aurora police said the driver of the Tesla reportedly ran a red light at South Airport Boulevard and collided with a vehicle in the northbound lane that had the right of way with a green light. The Tesla subsequently spun out and crashed into two more vehicles — one of which was an Aurora police vehicle that was stopped in the intersection.
The officer was not hurt, but two adults and four children suffered injuries, in addition to the driver of the Tesla who died on scene.
In the newly released video, the Tesla can be seen crashing into an SUV with six people on board. Aurora police had been running radar in the area because of all the problems with speeding, especially around this intersection.
A crash like the one on Monday night was not surprising to Wayne Blackwell who drives through the area often.
“I don't make that initial turn during a red light. And when it turns green, I kind of pause, because you never know who's gonna come blowing through that light. So now we have this joke where we say, okay, after the light turns green, 1001, 1002, now proceed, even if somebody beats their horn at you, “ Blackwell said.

Moments before the crash, an Aurora Police officer was using radar to catch speeders just a short distance from the intersection.
APD said speeders are causing too many problems on East Alameda Parkway.
“(It’s a place) where there are higher speeds, the number of crashes in this area and things like that kind of makes this a hot spot for police to focus their enforcement efforts," Aurora Police Department agent Matthew Longshore said.
The officer conducting speed enforcement said he clocked the Tesla going 97 miles an hour in a 40 mph zone.
"Three-hundred-and-ninety-eight traffic tickets have been issued near the intersection where the accident Monday night in the last 24 months,” Longshore said.
“There's a lot of speed going through the low rates road rage, road rage speed. So when you drive through here you just be careful,“ Driver Prince Johnson said.
On Tuesday, crews were at the intersection repairing damage caused by the crash. The driver of the car was said to be partially ejected during the crash and was described as 26 years old, but has not been officially identified. ...read more read less
