Basketball family: Brothers at CSU Bakersfield set to become teammates for the first time
Mar 25, 2025
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- There's a feeling that the long hours in the gym, in class and studying film was all for naught after a season-ending loss. A feeling some at Cal State Bakersfield may have felt after their campaign ended in a loss to UC Santa Barbara in the first round of the Big West
tournament earlier in March.
But when the clouds clear, the hope of next season comes into view. When CSUB takes the court again, they'll do it with two players who will probably work well together.

They are brothers, after all.
"Just very excited to play, and play in front of my hometown," said Bentley Waller, who redshirted his freshman season.
The Bakersfield Christian product averaged 24 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists during his senior year with the Eagles. He practiced with the Runners and is patiently waiting for his time to come on the court next season. When that time comes, he'll be suiting up with his older brother, Kadar.
"That's cool, I never thought I'd be able to play with my brother, you know? The age difference and everything," said Kadar. "It means a lot. It hasn't really hit me yet, it'll probably hit me when we're on the court at the same time during the game or something, but a lot of people don't get the chance to do that."
After appearing in 32 games for the 'Runners, Kadar is returning for his last season, and to pursue his MBA. The two will be playing ball together for the first time. Bentley said he spent his freshman campaign building on a successful high school career and acclimating to the college game.
"Every practice is hard, challenging, very competitive, and I've gotten better for sure," said Bentley. "I just can't wait until next year."
"He's developed in a lot of ways, he's gotten much stronger," said CSUB basketball head coach Rod Barnes. "When he first got here, he played with the speed and the pace of a high school kid and now he's made that adjustment."

So when basketball season comes back around, don't be surprised if it seems like those two are really clicking.
"Very exciting, because two brothers don't get to play often together," said Bentley. "So I'm very blessed to be in this position."
"They can really get on each other really hard," said Barnes on the brothers' attitude during practice. "Sometimes you have to get to know a guy to really be able to challenge him, but they know each other really well. They've already done it in practice. I think it's benefitted both of them already. I just think next year it'll be another level to it." ...read more read less
