WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- Health officials across D.C. announced Tuesday that a person who visited multiple locations across the District tested positive for measles.
DC Health said that anyone who traveled in the following locations during the listed times may have been exposed to the illness
.
Amtrak Northeast Regional 175 Train Southbound on March 19 from 7:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.
Amtrak Concourse, Union Station, on March 19 from 11 pm to 1:30 a.m.
MedStar Urgent Care Adams Morgan on March 22 from 7 to 11 p.m.
This announcement comes after the Maryland Department of Health confirmed measles cases in Prince George's County and Howard County over the last three weeks. At the beginning of March, the Virginia Department of Health also launched an investigation into the potential exposure of measles at the Washington Dulles International Airport.
Measles prevention: How the two-dose regimen works
D.C. health officials noted that the highly contagious illness can easily spread through the air when an infected person breathes, coughs or sneezes.
The symptoms will appear in two stages. The first stage will include a high fever, runny nose, watery red eyes and cough. These symptoms will start within the first 7 to 14 days after being exposed.
The second stage starts 3 to 5 days after symptoms start when a rash will begin to appear on the face and spread to the rest of the body.
People are contagious from four days before and after the rash appears.
What to do if you think you were exposed?
Health officials are advising anyone who might have been in any of the locations listed above to contact their health care provider or DC Health and monitor themselves for symptoms.
If a person has never received the measles vaccination, health officials warned they are at risk of contracting measles.
