ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – A racoon in the Town of Lima has recently tested positive for rabies, the Livingston County Department of Health confirmed.

Rabies is classified as a deadly virus that attacks the central nervous system in mammals. Rabies is most commonly found in raccoons, skunks, and bats in Livingston County.
Unvaccinated dogs, cats, and farm animals are at risk for getting rabies. Health officials said you typically cannot tell if an animal is rabid by looking at it. Wild or feral animals should always be avoided.
Some signs of rabies in wildlife include the inability to walk, appearance of 'drunkness', unwillingness to drink water or eat, drooling, aggressive behavior, or any significant change in temperament.
Health officials are urging people to stay safe and report any potential rabies exposures to the county's Department of Health.
You can report rabies exposure by call the DOH at (585) 243-7280 or fill out a bite report on this website here.
