Shawnee County sheriff posts work zone warning as drivers avoid road closed signs
Mar 25, 2025
SHAWNEE COUNTY (KSNT) - The Shawnee County Sheriff's Office (SNSO) is warning local drivers to obey road work signs or face fines or even arrest.
The SNSO posted on social media on Tuesday, March 25 that it is observing issues at some work areas in the county where drivers are not obeying road cl
osed signs. Deputies are seeing the most violations on Northwest 46th Street near Northwest Green Hills Road.
The sheriff's office said driving around a road closed sign is considered a misdemeanor crime. Drivers may receive a warning, citation or face arrest for disobeying these signs.
These traffic violations are occurring in the area of an ongoing roundabout construction site. This project has caused anger among some locals over the issues it's causing with lengthy detours and traffic disruptions in the area.
Do you still have to slow down for work zones on the weekend in Kansas?
People are encouraged to follow one of the marked detour routes and avoid driving on parts of the road which are closed as it poses a danger to construction workers. Part of Northwest 46th Street, roughly running from where it intersects with Northwest Button Road west to Northwest Green Hills Road, is open only to local residents.
