New security measures at Providence Place Mall aim to enhance safety
Mar 25, 2025
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — New security policies are now in effect at Providence Place Mall, with the goal of creating a safer shopping environment.
The changes, which began Monday, include increased security patrols, upgraded surveillance and a Youth Guidance Program restricting unsupervised ac
cess for minors.
The Youth Guidance Program requires that anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or supervising adult at all times.
After 5 p.m., this rule extends to anyone under 21.
New security upgrades include new access control at the Skybridge with new doorways to limit entry, more security personnel with extended hours, upgraded CCTV cameras for enhanced surveillance, a third-party security audit to evaluate and improve mall safety and an updated Code of Conduct, which now prohibits congregating, disruptive behavior and smoking or vaping.
These changes follow a series of incidents involving teens, including a January 2025 incident where several teens were arrested at the Skybridge for assault and robbery charges.
In November of 2023, six teens were arrested in connection to a robbery outside the mall.
Shoppers have mixed feelings about the changes.
“It’s a double-edged sword,” said Chris Chevallier, a tourist.
“It’s nice to see more security, but subconsciously, you might think—does that mean the area is unsafe?”
Pawtucket resident Benjamin Scheff worries about how the increased security presence will affect certain groups.
“I think it’s a little ridiculous, I was at the mall yesterday I’ve seen more security,” said Scheff.
“For some demographics, that can be a very dissuading presence.”
John Dorsey, Receiver of Providence Place Mall, said the changes are part of a long-term safety strategy.
“The first step with the Youth Guidance Program is community outreach—educating the public on why it’s in place and what we hope to accomplish,” said Dorsey.
Providence Place officials said these security measures are just the beginning.
Parking garage repairs are also underway and expected to continue through the spring.
