Two students charged after knife found at Bayside High School
Virginia Beach police confirmed they responded to Bayside High School around 7:30 a.m. for an individual attempting to enter the school. The adult was able to enter the school after following students inside, according to a letter sent by the Virginia Beach City Public Schools.
Police confirmed that at some point the individual removed his shirt.
The individual was taken into custody by the School Resource Officer shortly after entering, and no weapons were recovered. The school did not go into a lock down. The suspect is detained and charges are being screened, police said.
VBCPS sent the following letter out to the community:
Good morning, Bayside High School families,
I want to provide an update on a security incident that took place this morning. An adult entered the building by following arriving students. Thanks to the vigilance of our security team, the individual was immediately identified. When the person refused to cooperate, school administration, school security, and the school resource officer took the individual into custody, and the Virginia Beach Police Department was called to assist.
I want to commend our security team for its swift and decisive actions. Its strong presence and attention to detail ensured that our safety protocols were followed effectively, preventing any risk to students and staff. I also want to thank VBPD for its prompt response and support.
I understand that seeing a heightened police presence, especially so soon after last week’s lockdown, may cause concern. Please know that today’s incident was handled quickly and appropriately, reinforcing our commitment to maintaining a safe and secure learning environment.
Thank you for your support and trust in our Bayside High School community.
Thank you,
VBCPS
Less than a week earlier, the school went into lockdown after a report of a weapon on campus. A 14-year-old girl and 15-year-old boy were detained in the incident.
