INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indiana farmers will soon have an online portal for all of their regulatory questions under a bill Gov. Mike Braun signed Tuesday.
The bill is the first to receive the governor’s signature and is a legislative priority for his administration. It requires the Indiana
State Department of Agriculture to set up an online portal for farmers to use.
Among other things, the portal would have to include a searchable database of grants, regulatory checklists, technical support and a way for farmers to submit comments on current or proposed regulations. It also requires a report and survey on lost farmland every five years beginning in 2029.
Braun, whose background includes tree farming and row cropping in addition to his work as the founder and CEO of Meyer Distributing, said it “means a lot” to him that his first bill signing involves an agriculture-related measure. He believes it will help farmers avoid red tape and communicate what regulators can do better.
“Hoosier farmers feed America and power our economy and this bill will make their important job just a little bit easier,” Braun said.
The governor signed six other bills Tuesday, including a bill to revise Indiana’s law prohibiting people from coming within 25 feet of a law enforcement officer engaged in their duties. Three more reached his desk on Monday and are awaiting action from him.
