Six quilting stores team up for Indiana Quilters Trail
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indiana Quilters Trail Shop Hop is back to inspire creativity with fans of the hobby. It’s an annual effort to get more people into local craft stores, starting Wednesday
Six stores across central Indiana are
taking part in this year’s Indiana Quilters Trail.
It’s $15 to participate in the trail. That price gets a participant the trail’s “passport” and a special tote bag.
Quilts Plus on Main Street in Lebanon is one of the stores on the route. Owner Connie Lancaster says she’s excited to potentially meet new faces.
“It’s just a fun time for people to gather a group of friends and get in their car,” Lancaster said. “[They can] see some great quilt shops — maybe some shops they haven’t been to in the past — and just see some of the things that we do.”
Each store will stamp the passport. They’ll also give out a portion of a pattern to create a special quilt for the event.
Participants who visit every store will get entered into a drawing for several prizes, including a $300 shopping spree.
The trail reaches downtown Indianapolis with Crimson Tate on Mass Ave. Owner Heather Givans says the trail is open to all skill levels.
She’s been working with an older quilting style called English paper pricing. It’s very different from the modern styles her store typically deals with and involves using cardstock or other sturdy paper.
“It is all hand-sewn,” Givans said. “Like your grandma took the cereal box cardboard and cut it into pieces, wrapped it with fabric…It is very meditative and relaxing, but very slow-going. Don’t do it on a deadline.”
Copi Saxton, owner of Always in Stitches in Noblesville, describes the hobby as part of the “Grandma Arts.”
Saxton says the practice is dying. She’s encouraging the next generation to pick it up.
“This act of stitching uses both parts of your brain,” Saxton said. “It’s actually very therapeutic — It’s cheaper than paying a therapist. It’s more fun because you get a really cool project when you’re done that you can either keep for yourself or give to someone else.”
The Indiana Quilters Trail Shop Hop runs through Saturday.
