Jury trial set for semi driver charged with reckless homicide in deadly I465 crash

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The jury trial for a semi driver charged after a crash in an I-465 construction zone that killed a 9-year-old boy has been set.
Dieuson Leron, 24, of Jupiter, Florida, had his initial hearing in Marion County court Tuesday morning.
Leron was charged with reckless
homicide and multiple counts of criminal recklessness on Feb. 27, over six months since the July 2024 accident.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Leron was driving in the center lane of I-465 eastbound through a construction zone when he failed to stop for a traffic backup.
As a result, he rear-ended a red Honda Civic, causing it to crash into other vehicles. Leron’s semi jackknifed after hitting several other cars, blocking three of the four lanes of traffic for several hours.
A 9-year-old boy inside the Honda was killed in the accident, and multiple others were hurt.
Leron told police at the scene he knew he was driving too fast. He added he tried to slow down but ended up swerving, causing the chain reaction of crashes.
Investigators say Leron’s truck was equipped with a dash cam, which showed his speed at 62 mph seconds before the crash. Police add that Leron was driving without a co-driver, which is required for the distance he was covering, and had exceeded the maximum allowable driving hours.
Investigators determined that Leron followed other vehicles too close and did not apply his brakes before the impact. There was no evidence of braking before the crash, police say.
On March 3, he was arrested in Florida and later extradited to Indianapolis. He was released from the Marion County jail Monday.
Leron’s jury trial was set to begin May 27. Online court records show a Marion County judge permitted Leron to stay in Florida during the trial.
