Memphis woman makes history scuba diving on all 7 continents

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- March is women's history month and we want to honor some of the most remarkable women in the Mid-South, including a Memphis dive master who is setting records under the water.
Corhonda Dawson spent her 51st birthday 200 feet below the surface diving in the world's deepest pool.
It's scary for some, but it's how this Memphis occupational therapist and mom recharges.
"I'm at Dive Dubai. I'm super, super excited," she said. "There are no voices saying 'hey, I need this, or I need that. Give me this, give me that.' All you're doing is flying nice and slow, listening to your heart rate, keenly aware of your breaths."

Dawson has been scuba diving for more than a decade, her underwater explorations taking her around the globe. In fact, the National Association of Black Scuba Divers says Dawson is the first African-American woman to dive on all 7 continents.
She did it in five months and 22 days.
"For me, I just wanted to represent African-American females in a new narrative for us to be seen as adventurers because oftentimes there are other people that are in that same space," said Dawson.
It took a divorce for Dawson to discover her adventurous side. She also became an avid snowboarder, and her two daughters went along for the ride.
"Just getting the girls out there in the ocean and on the mountain. It's just those incremental successes where they said, you know, 'I can do this and did it,' said Dawson.

Growing up, Dawson never had access to an ocean, just a Memphis pool.
"It all began all the way back as a lifeguard at the fairground pool," she said.
She wants to set more records and show others what they can accomplish.
"Being the first African-American female, all those things are tools to change minds because that's, at the end of the day, what it's about anyway. I'm trying to change someone's mind because just because you've been under-exposed, doesn't mean you can't do it," Dawson said.
This week, Dawson travels to Antarctica to begin another 7 continent dive. This time, it will be documented by the adventure travel group Aurora Expeditions. ...read more read less
