ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Rochester Police announced on Monday that they have arrested the man who shot and killed Ali Saleh, 30, Sunday evening as Saleh worked behind the counter at Sana’a Food Market at the intersection of Clifford Avenue and Miller Street.
Ali Saleh, 30.
Police said Tony
C. Brown, 42, approached Saleh at around 6 p.m. and shot him multiple times at close range, possibly in retaliation for an altercation that occurred at the store several days prior involving an associate of Saleh’s.
Brown then fled the scene, according to police, while Saleh was rushed to the hospital via ambulance where he was later pronounced dead.
Investigators said Brown’s vehicle was later spotted around Portland Avenue and that’s where they arrested Brown, who has since been charged with Murder in the 2nd Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 2nd Degree.
Monday morning, Jose Perez was seen shuffling up to Sana’a Food Market assuming it was closed, but wanted to be sure.
It’s a stop he’s made regularly for decades and often encountered Saleh.
“Nice young fella, he got along with everybody,” Perez said. “It’s just a shame.”
Angel Vazquez stopped by the store while News 8 was there so he could relay that in the years Saleh had worked at Sana’a, Vazquez had never seen him be disrespectful to a single customer.
“I knew him since I was a kid. He was a good guy, always looking out for the community, any time you needed something for your family, he’d look out for you,” Vazquez said. “It’s kind of messed up, man.”

Vazquez said Saleh had just returned to Rochester after living abroad for almost a year.
Balloon Release:
Monday evening, balloons went up in honor of Saleh as those who frequented the market he worked at for more than 20 years paid tribute to him.
"Ali was a one-of-a-kind man," one person said. "Whatever you needed, he would come provide."
Tea candles spread against the store Saleh showed up to every day and spelled his name.
"It's really sad for somebody to go this fast. 30 years old. 30 years old. He did everything. School, everything and gone, like he here one day and you're gone. I saw him three days ago. 'Hey, I just got back from my country.' I'm here, Bo," friend Bohana Bedell told News 8.
Investigators said a search warrant on Brown’s car and a nearby home turned up a .357 caliber handgun and other evidence linked to the murder.
Brown is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday morning. ...read more read less
