Officers tried to catch a motorcyclist, who they said was driving recklessly Sunday night. "We observed this motorcycle initially doing donuts in the area of the Bank of Albuquerque and then notified officers of it,” said Sgt. Vicente Martinez, APD.
Sgt. Vicente Martinez recounted the pursuit, but from a different perspective, "We try to fly high and kind of be out of the area. A lot of times people don't even know we're looking at them."
The Air Support Unit played a vital role during Albuquerque Police's downtown traffic enforcement operation over the weekend.
Officers said the driver of the motorcycle, later identified as 27-year-old Keaneu Borge-Perez, fled from police when they tried to pull him over. Borge-Perez drove to northeast Albuquerque and half an hour later, his bike broke down. He kept running on foot, but air support kept an eye on him from above. "Our helicopter is equipped with a forward-looking infrared and basically detects heat,” said Martinez.
Air support spotted him crawling underneath the porch of a northeast home. Officers on the ground moved in and made the arrest. They later learned Borge Perez was on probation and driving on a revoked license due to DWI.
"It was just a coordinated effort, just using police radios, coordinating with them, letting them know the direction of travel, when they pulled over, and yeah, just great work by everyone involved,” said Martinez.
When asked how vital it is to have eyes in the sky during an operation like this, Martinez responded, “It's extremely vital."
Officers issued 564 citations over the weekend, including six DWI arrests and three felony arrests. "It's always good when the bad guy, when they don't get away and we're able to take them into custody,” said Martinez.
Borge-Perez is facing charges of fleeing an officer, reckless driving and driving on a revoked license. APD said another operation is scheduled for next weekend. ...read more read less
