IU guard joins growing list of former Hoosiers in transfer portal

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The number’s now at four. Four Indiana Hoosiers basketball players have now entered themselves into the transfer portal. The latest addition – redshirt freshman guard Jakai Newton.
The former four-star recruit joins Malik Reneau, Mackenzie Mgbako and Gabe Cupps as
former Hoosiers looking for a new home.
Newton, a Georgia native, played in only four games this past season, averaging 1.5 points a game.
That now leaves new head coach Darian DeVries with only three scholarship players still left on the roster. The Hoosiers’ top three scorers from last year are all gone — Reneau and Mgbako to the portal, and Oumar Ballo to graduation.
There is a chance a fourth scholarship player will return. Senior forward Luke Goode is petitioning the NCAA for an extra year of eligibility. If that’s granted, he could return to Bloomington. Goode averaged just over nine points a game and was IU’s fourth best scorer.
