BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WISH) — Visit Bloomington, the Monroe County city’s tourism arm, is shining a spotlight on women who contribute to the arts and cultural scene.
One woman being recognized is Charlie Edmonds, a music
educator who is making a difference through her innovative learning platform, Jubilee. Edmonds, who is pursuing a doctoral degree in music education at Indiana University, founded Jubilee to help beginning musicians relate more with instrumental music.
Edmonds said, “It’s really cool and such a boost to be recognized in that way, and to see that someone sees that what I’m doing is valuable.”
From gospel to hip-hop and contemporary worship, Edmonds believes these musical styles let students engage with music while developing their technical skills. The former band director says many diversity gaps exist in music education.
“It was tough to convince my students that this learning was for them. Most of the models in the method books and in the videos I would show, or concert or band music, it was white. It was written by white people. For me to even be a Black band director, I think that was convincing for them in a way, but still many would quit within a year, because they didn’t think that was for them.”
The Jubilee method book provides structured lessons and exercises for band and orchestra students. It includes sheet music with lyrics, a skills page, and scriptural references so people can learn about the history behind what they’re playing. Edmonds says the platform is particularly helpful for students in grades 4-9.
“It’s just a really unique experience. something that hasn’t really been used a lot in the classroom or in private lessons, community groups or whenever kids are learning instruments. It’s a book form that’s a teachable companion for a kid.”
Edmonds plans to have an online platform soon to expand her business.
