FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Fort Wayne Community Schools announced Monday night that about 20 jobs are being eliminated and not replaced.
"We are not replacing those people," said Mark Daniel, FWCS Superintendent. "We're moving people into those positions. So we are combining positions or spread
ing those duties out."
The move comes as the Indiana Statehouse ponders budget cuts for education. Rather than wait, Daniel and FWCS decided to do it early to allow those who want to keep working the time to find a new job.
"I can't forecast what those cuts are going to be, but I know we're going to get some," Daniel said. "So let's be proactive, let's also be empathetic to our employees."
Each board member took time to lament the decision in their comment window.
"Call it what you want, retirements, terminations of more than 20 people at this school district," said Steve Corona, District 5 FWCS board member. "It's a blow to the things we've been doing and our culture."
Daniel in particular took time to say that even cuts like these ones may not be enough with coming budget concerns.
"I do not believe we can cut our way out of that," Daniel said. "How do you combat it?"
Daniel's answer was to increase enrollment. He pointed towards various FWCS programs like AMP Lab and the Career Center as being bright spots that should make parents want to enroll their children.
