NACS continues to make strides for decade plan in potential elementary additions and natatorium

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — Northwest Allen County Schools continues to plan for their potential projects in the next decade.
Two of those projects could include a proposed new natatorium and possible expansions to their elementary schools.
Partnering with Fort Wayne Swim and Wellness Allianc
e and Parkview Regional Medical Center, NACS is working to acquire the U.S. Olympic Trials swimming pool. This proposed natatorium is estimated to cost $54 million in total.
Their current natatorium holds an 8-lane swimming pool with 6-8 kids per lane, as the proposed natatorium would be 300% larger than the current one.
"Currently we have an eight-lane 25-yard pool that was built in the early 2000s when we were half the size of the school district that we are now," Wayne Barker, NACS Superintendent said. "We can no longer sustain the demand that we have for the pool from the community, from our students, and our student-athletes. We need to do something to improve that."
NACS says they are currently in a holding pattern as they are waiting for Fort Wayne Swim and Wellness Alliance to finish their fundraising for the project. They say after that, they can continue conversations and move forward with the natatorium.
During a meeting last year, the board also discussed the possibility of building their ninth elementary school, but no plans have been made to do so.
As nothing is planned for a new elementary school, they are looking into the possibilities of adding to their existing elementary schools.
"We know that the ninth elementary was always in our NACS ten-year plan," Brandon Bitting, Assistant Superintendent of Operations and Safety said. "To try to get ahead of that, as we're growing, we thought it would be beneficial to examine our current buildings and see if we could add on to those spaces."
NACS says the decision to build on will be made after looking at enrollment numbers this fall. Bitting plans to bring more visuals on potential construction to their next board meeting in April. ...read more read less
