BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) -- The City Hall Treasurer’s Office in Dunkirk reopened on Monday, six days after it was ordered closed by the New York State Comptroller's Office.
Last week, Dunkirk Mayor Kate Wdowiasz said at a common council meeting that an investigation into the office was underway. D
unkirk police said that the treasurer's office was secured following a subpoena by a grand jury.
“(This) was an action taken to preserve documents contained within that office,” Wdowiasz said last week. “This action was set in motion to the discovery of questionable accounting practices which were brought to light through new policies, procedures and enhanced oversight measures implemented by me to safeguard public funds.”
The investigation comes as Dunkirk deals with a financial crisis and a looming property tax hike. Property owners will soon face an 84% increase in property taxes.
Last week, the state’s comptroller’s office said in a statement to WIVB News 4 that it cannot comment on a pending investigation.
