Fresno Police officer dies after 'courageous battle' with cancer

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - The Fresno Police Department announced that following a "courageous battle with cancer," Officer Ryan Torres passed away over the weekend, just 10 years after graduating from Clovis West High School.

Torres, Torres was hired as a police academy cadet on Feb. 8, 2021. Officials say he quickly became loved by his fellow cadets and instructors.
His dedication and drive to serve the law enforcement profession and his community - he was known for always having a smile on his face and an energetic attitude. Ryan truly loved serving his community, and he exemplified the highest standards and traditions of the Fresno Police Department.

Officials also say Officer Torres was an exemplary, beloved person beyond the badge.
"His empathy, understanding, and genuine care for others made him approachable, and he was always ready to lend a helping hand," officials said. "He deeply loved his work as a police officer, his love for his wife, Zoe, was even greater. She was his greatest supporter and the love of his life, always encouraging him to pursue his dreams."
Torres began his career with the Fresno Police Department in the Northwest Policing District, and officials say he was most recently assigned to the Southeast Policing District. Officer Torres was actively preparing for the upcoming SWAT exam when he was diagnosed with his illness.
