TOPEKA (KSNT) - After a thrilling second-round victory, K-State women's basketball is dancing on to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2002.
The No. 5 Wildcats knocked off another set of Wildcats - No. 4 Kentucky - 80-79 in overtime Sunday afternoon to advance to the NCAA tournament's second
weekend. Former K-State guard and current college basketball analyst Missy Heidrick joined K-Nation Sunday evening to discuss the 'Cats run so far.
"This is an opportunity where this K-State program has been kind of scratching and clawing and trying to get out of that round of 32," Heidrick said. " ... In a very, very competitive four-five seed game on the road, and they needed the entire team effort, a complete team effort to make it happen, and they got that."
Heidrick also broke down the difference Ayoka Lee's return from injury has made in the last few games, as well as the play of veteran guard Temira Poindexter and sophomore guard Taryn Sides.
As the Wildcats look to the Sweet 16, there's a chance they could come face-to-face with JuJu Watkins and No. 1 USC. The Trojans play No. 9 Mississippi State late Monday evening for the right to play K-State in the next round.
"This USC team is loaded and it is with what I think is a generational talent and the National Player of the Year in JuJu Watkins," Heidrick said. "Her size, her athleticism, her speed, what she's able to do with the ball in her hands, the amount of attention that she draws makes everyone around her better."
The full interview with Heidrick aired in Sunday's episode of K-Nation and can be watched above. K-Nation airs every Sunday night following 27 News at 10, only on KSNT. ...read more read less
