A high-speed pursuit raced through S.R. 224 over the weekend. Summit County sheriff’s deputies attempted to stop a stolen vehicle traveling “at a high rate of speed” on Saturday, but the driver failed to yield. So deputies initiated a pursuit, according to a shift report from the Sheriff’s
Office.One of the vehicle’s tires was successfully spiked, but the pursuit continued into Salt Lake County. The Utah Highway Patrol was called to assist in stopping the car.The vehicle was spiked for a second time on Interstate 80 by mile marker 125, near the Highland Park area of Salt Lake City. However, the driver “continued to flee despite having all tires spiked and traveling on [the car’s] rims.”A state trooper then initiated a PIT maneuver, a technique used by law enforcement to intentionally cause a vehicle to spin out of control and come to a stop. Although the maneuver was successful, the man driving exited the vehicle and fled on foot.He had not been located as of Monday afternoon, according to Sgt. Skyler Talbot with the Sheriff’s Office.There was a woman in the vehicle who did not run. She was arrested for theft and obstruction of justice.Deputies confirmed the car had been taken overnight from the Clearfield area after contacting the registered owner.The Sheriff’s Office responded to multiple other calls between Monday, March 17, and Sunday, March 23, including driving under the influence, theft and an unattended death.Sunday, March 23Search and Rescue was called to assist the Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office with an overdue person because the person’s vehicle was found in Summit County at the North Fork trailhead. The individual was later found uninjured in Wasatch County and extracted by a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter.Deputies were called to investigate an assault at a restaurant in Kamas, but the female suspect left in a vehicle before they arrived on scene. Video surveillance footage reviewed during the investigation showed the woman assaulting two employees at the bar. The Draper Police Department was called for assistance because deputies believed her address was in their jurisdiction. Draper officers located the woman and took her into custody for several offenses that occurred. The Summit County Attorney’s Office is screening charges related to the case in Summit County.Saturday, March 22A vehicle with an equipment violation was traveling westbound on I-80, so deputies initiated a traffic stop. There was a strong smell of alcohol coming from inside, and the driver performed poorly on field sobriety tests. The driver was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence.A vehicle traveling eastbound on I-80 crashed into a cement barrier. Deputies responded to investigate the accident, and a K9 unit alerted them to the presence of narcotics. Deputies searched the vehicle and found a “distributable” amount of narcotics and drug paraphernalia.Friday, March 21Two unknown suspects, one woman and one man, entered a shoe store in Kimball Junction and left with approximately $2,000 in merchandise. Deputies obtained photos of the suspects and determined they’d stolen from similar shoe stores in West Jordan, Lehi and Farmington. The case is under investigation.Wednesday, March 19A Garmin SOS notification alerted Search and Rescue about an individual who had hit a tree and was in extreme pain in the Castle Lake area. A medical helicopter responded, hoisted the person from the mountain and transported them to the hospital.Tuesday, March 18Deputies stopped a vehicle in Kimball Junction after observing a traffic violation. The vehicle smelled of marijuana, and the driver consented to a search. Deputies found a “user amount” of marijuana. The driver was cited and released.A family member found an adult woman unresponsive in their Marion home. Medical personnel and law enforcement declared the woman deceased after responding to the residence. The detective and crime scene investigator were notified because the death was unattended. There were two juveniles in the home, who were released to a family guardian. The case is active and being investigated by detectives, but a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office said nothing suspicious was “immediately apparent.”Deputies received a trespassing complaint at a property in Coalville near the I-80 exit. They located two men who admitted to trespassing, as well as video surveillance footage of the men entering and walking around the property.
