METHUEN, Mass. (WLNE) — MSPCA-Angell said an emaciated horse is recovering after it was surrendered in need of medical treatment.
Astrid, a nearly two-year-old Percheron Filly, was surrendered on March 7 “as part of an ongoing MSPCA Law Enforcement case,” according to MSPCA-Angell.

ll Equine and Farm Animal Outreach and Rescue Manager Kaycie McCarthy said that Astrid had been down and not able to get up for several days. “It was clear even before we got her back on her feet that something was wrong,” McCarthy said.
Once a team was able to get Astrid up, she was brought to the Tufts University’s Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine for treatment.
“She needed hospitalization and advanced diagnostics that we’re not able to provide at the farm,” McCarthy said. “When Astrid was examined, it was clear that she was emaciated, and there were sores on her body, which is something that often happens when horses are down for a prolonged period of time.”
MSPCA added Astrid is also being treated for pneumonia and parasites.
“Astrid needed a lot of time in the hospital. She’s been so weak that the Tufts team is using straps to help her get up when she’s done resting, because she doesn’t quite have the strength to do it herself,” McCarthy said.
McCarthy added that the team believes she will be “strong enough” to be taken to Nevins Farm in Methuen this week, but that her recovery will take multiple months.
MSPCA officers continue to investigate how Astrid was found in her condition.
