WEST WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — The Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) is investigating after a 10-year-old autistic boy was caught riding an ATV along the highway earlier this month.
Rhode Island State Police troopers rushed to I-95 North in Cranston the evening of Marc
h 10 after receiving several 911 calls from drivers who reported seeing the child, who was riding the ATV slowly down the highway, according to an incident report obtained by 12 News.
Troopers eventually spotted the young boy driving in the far right lane with traffic crawling slowly behind him.
The troopers were able to successfully get the boy to pull over into the breakdown lane, according to the incident report.
It became quickly apparent to the troopers that the boy was autistic and nonverbal, the incident report noted, since he was rocking his body and did not respond to their questions.
The troopers made sure the boy wasn't injured before placing him into the cruiser and trying to identify him. 12 News was there as the troopers moved the ATV off the highway and began searching it for identification.
The boy was then brought to Hasbro Children's Hospital, where the troopers learned that he had been reported missing by his father in West Warwick earlier that evening. His father later explained to the troopers that his son regularly rides his ATV around the block, the incident report continued.
The young boy went outside to ride his ATV around 6 p.m., his father told the troopers. It wasn't until he couldn't hear the ATV anymore that the man began searching for his son, according to the incident report. He reported him missing after being unable to find him.
The troopers attempted to ask the boy why he left his neighborhood upon learning that he communicated via his personal iPad, but the incident report stated he was unable to answer them.
The incident report added that the boy got onto I-95 North via Route 37 East, but how he got to the highway remains unclear.
