ANSON COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- A 6-year-old girl is dead and a man is in critical condition after an apparent murder-attempted suicide in Anson County, according to the NC State Bureau of Investigation.
Around 3 a.m. on Monday, deputies with the Anson County Sheriff's Office responded to
a 911 call from a woman who said her young daughter and vehicle were taken from her residence in Polkton, reportedly by the girl's father.

A "be on the lookout" was also issued for the vehicle, a Jeep Liberty, officials said. Around 8 a.m., deputies saw the vehicle in Anson County and started to pursue it. A few minutes later the vehicle wrecked off Little Creek Road near Old Winfield Road in Wadesboro.
"You also have to respect that if the biological parent has custody of that child there’s not a lot you can do as far as taking him away without some type of custody papers filed showing that law enforcement can do that," Sheriff Scott Howell with Anson County Sheriff's Office said.
NCSBI said a girl was inside the vehicle with a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. The man also had a gunshot wound and was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
“It’s not something you want to deal with, but we tried everything we could to save that child and at the end of the day there’s nothing we could have done," Polkton Chief of Police Tim Hutchinson said.
Investigators believe the child was shot by the man and that he also shot himself. The identity of the man has not been released. This is still an active investigation.
