SUAMICO, Wis. (WFRV) – Staff at the NEW Zoo are on a mission to track down two otters that escaped during a recent snowstorm.
Louie and Ophelia, North American River Otters, managed to find a small break in the chain link fence during the storm in the early hours of Thursday morning, according
to NEW Zoo Director Carmen Murach.

"In the wee hours during our last winter storm event, which is a fun time for otters, they were busy that night and managed to find just a very small break in the chain link fence," explained Murach.
Though the otters remain on the loose, zoo staff have been working with a professional tracker to help locate them. Murach said the animals have been spotted in the area, with occasional glimpses and tracks left behind.

"They were everywhere that first night, and we're sitting here within a 1,600-acre park, so they were roaming pretty far and wide, continuing to come back and check in," Murach said. "But in the last couple of days, it looks like they have been sticking a lot closer to home."
The otters are safe, as they started life in the wild, but zoo keepers continue to monitor their movements. Anyone who spots the otters is encouraged to contact the zoo, and updates on their search can be found on Facebook. ...read more read less
