Mar 24, 2025
On Monday afternoon, the Aurora Police Department released audio and video footage from the fatal officer-involved shooting of Christopher Lepe, 19, on March 19, offering further details on the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The footage is available on the Aurora Police Department’s Faceb
ook page.
“We want to be upfront,” Aurora Police Chief Keith Cross said in a statement Monday. “This footage contains graphic content and may be difficult to watch. However, transparency is a cornerstone of our commitment to this community, and we believe it’s important to share this information.”
In the early hours of March 19, Aurora police responded to a mutual aid request attempting to locate a person wanted in connection with an aggravated battery to a Geneva police officer, officials said. Aurora police ultimately stopped a car after a vehicle pursuit, according to officials.
As officers attempted to contact the driver of the car, police said the driver displayed a weapon, and two Aurora police officers discharged their guns at the driver, who was struck by gunfire, according to past reporting. Officers performed aid on the individual until he was transported to a local hospital, and he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The following day, the Kane County Coroner’s Office identified the man killed as Christopher Lepe, 19, of Aurora.
Community members, including Lepe’s family, held a candlelight vigil outside the Aurora Police Department headquarters on Thursday evening, mourning his death and demanding details on the circumstances of his fatal shooting from police.
The audio and video released on Monday includes the mutual aid request to the Aurora police in connection with the battery of the Geneva police officer, as well as dashboard camera and body camera footage from Aurora police.
Some of the audio has been redacted, Cross said in his statement Monday afternoon, and faces have been blurred to protect involved individuals’ privacy, officials said.
“This is a difficult and emotional time, and I know many of you have questions, concerns and a need for clarity,” Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin said in Monday’s statement. “As your mayor, I have advocated for and expected transparency and that is exactly why we are releasing this video today.”
The incident continues to be under investigation by the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office and Kane County Major Crime Task Force, according to Monday’s release from Aurora police.
