Newsom announces record grants to safeguard nonprofits from hate crimes

(KRON) – Governor Gavin Newsom announced “record-breaking” $76 million worth of grants to more than 300 California community groups to protect nonprofits and houses of worship from violence on Monday.
Newsom’s office in partnership with the State Legislature created California State Nonpr
ofit Security Grant Program, which provided funding for target hardening and other physical security enhancements to nonprofit organizations for a decade. The groups are at high risk for violent attacks and hate crimes due to ideology, beliefs, or mission.
This year's grant amount surpassed the most awarded, according to Newsom.

In total, 347 groups will receive a grant. According to the governor’s office, more than 70% of the groups are ideology and spiritually-based organizations.
“Today more than ever, our state stands together to support our communities,” said Newsom. “Californians deserve the right to worship, love, and gather safely, without fear of violence.”
Per Newsom’s office, the grants can assist with many security plans and protocols, such as reinforced doors, gates, high-intensity lighting and access control systems. ...read more read less
