Wamego OZ Museum reopens after significant renovation work
Mar 24, 2025
WAMEGO (KSNT) - A local museum showcasing the bright and colorful world of OZ in northeast Kansas has made some changes recently to enhance the experience of guests.
27 News spoke with Katlyn Britton, operations coordinator at the OZ Museum and Columbian Theatre, to learn more about what has chan
ged following the completion of recent renovation work. She said the museum hasn't undergone any major renovations since 2003 with recent work focusing on making the place more accessible and welcoming.
"There are some things like our bathrooms and office area where our needs outgrew the space," Britton said. "We completely redid our office area where we greet guests and made it a lot more efficient to serve customers quickly."

Britton said significant work was completed to make the museum compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The museum also renovated its bathroom area, transforming it into a space that more closely matches the theme of the 1939 "Wizard of Oz" film.
"We previously had only three toilets total for all guests we received daily," Britton said. "That can be 300-500 in a single day. Three stalls isn't what we needed."
Workers started the renovation process in early January this year with the last of the updates completed on March 7. Britton said the museum also took the time to spruce up the individual cases in its collection which contains more than 2,000 pieces that are on display to the public.
"We modified all the cases inside," Britton said. "We took all the artifacts off display. Better filtration, better lighting, installed backing so we can have more flexibility for how we display artifacts."

The Wamego OZ Museum contains more than 30,000 pieces related to the classic movie but only has enough space to display a fraction of its extensive collection. Britton said some new artifacts people might see during their visit at the museum include flying monkeys and a copy of the Cowardly Lion's cape created by a fashion designer during the museum's closure.
"This remodel, for one, gave us a chance to completely reimagine how we display the collection and original pieces inside the museum," Britton said. "We were able to beautify those cases quite a bit and showcase important pieces. Give a more catered experience to visitors."
Britton encourages people to come by the museum this year to see the changes firsthand and learn more about the Land of Oz. She said the museum will be adding some new pieces to its display area in the fall and that people can see the house used in the original film on display while it is on loan to the museum.
The OZ Museum can be found at 511 Lincoln in Wamego. You can learn more about what it has to offer by visiting its website or following it on Facebook.
